CES "Reshaping Mobility" AR Experience

Our team was tasked with designing an AR experience that would be used as part of Deloitte's presence at CES 2019. The idea was to create an experience that could viewed in 3 different ways:
  • First, as part of an article Deloitte had written on the future of mobility
  • Second, the AR targets from the article would be replicated in large scale as part of Deloitte's booth experience
  • And third, as part of a stage presentation on the future of mobility

Given a relatively limited timeframe, it was quite a daunting task creating AR content that would work in such different contexts. Not only would our experiences have to work in small scale in the magazine and in large scale on a booth wall, they'd also need to work on stage with a live presenter.

First, rather than have content popping out of the page, we came up with the idea of creating "shadowboxes" that would work nicely for both the horizontal surface of a magazine, as well as the vertical surface of a booth wall. Our 2D artist created gorgeous images that served as AR image targets that, when scanned with a mobile app, would open up and reveal a small scene inside illustrating one of the technology trends discussed in the article. For the stage presentation, we selected some "hero items" from those scenes to show on stage with the speaker, and used similar techniques to make them appear in the live feed of the presentation. Since we didn't have access to the presentation space until a day before the event, we actually mocked it up in VR to plan out projector placement and camera positioning.

All three experiences were big hits, sparking interest in Deloitte's "reshaping mobility" initiative.
